It has been a huge
learning curve for me personally and also for all the teachers at Tatva who
till sometime back, were not so tech savvy. However, the Covid-19 crisis has
changed all that. We are living in extraordinary times. The world around us has
radically transformed within the past couple of weeks and months into a
science-fiction movie.

The idea of being able
to just port what you’re doing in a classroom into an online environment has
its own problems. But trying to do that in the midst of a pandemic is another
problem altogether.

Even in this time of
“social distancing”, we cannot forget the fact that education is not just a cognitive
process. It is also a social process. As teachers, the way we form these
relationships with our students online and the way we facilitate our students
to form these relationships with their peers online still is and will be the
key to the success of any kind of online teaching and learning.

The management at Tatva
Global School was quick to transition to online teaching and learning, and
probably was among the very first schools to realize that online learning was
the most viable alternative. We had the courage to go beyond just sending links
for children to access and learn on their own. We created personalized
presentations with a voice over given by the specific class teachers / subject
teachers to provide a personal touch, a systematic approach to the process and all
that made a huge difference. We took the road less travelled!! And it made all
the difference! It took great effort to organize, plan, assimilate and execute
online classes for our students but at the end it was a very fruitful and
satisfying experience as we were able to deliver quality learning, which was
well appreciated by all the stakeholders, especially parents, our partners in
this process.

But, what were/are the
real challenges of online teaching and learning? Women teachers need a special
mention, here as the rigours of doing the daily chores and managing online
classes efficiently, can take a heavy toll on their overall health and well-being.
However, credit goes to these teachers who have made it possible and always
came up with a pleasant smile when facing the students online.

It was a herculean task
to prepare a step-by-step guide on how to access and use online learning tools
and curriculum, making sure that this information was presented in various
formats including video and text, ask families to make sure all students –
especially the youngest learners – knew how to log in to the apps or access the
links and know their passwords. Teachers needed to know how to take attendance,
provide extra tech support and make sure parents and teachers knew how to ask
for help.

And the IT team had
worked long hours with service providers like Google and enabled us, the
teachers. with our lessons. It was a tumultuous ride and now after a week, we
are sailing smooth on rough waters.

It has been a beautiful
learning experience for all involved and I hope that normalcy is restored as
soon as possible… Happy learning..
